The radiator overflow tank also has a 1/16 inch hole in the top for ventilation. This radiator flow tank allows the engine coolant to be maintained within the operating temperature range while the engine is operating at peak performance.

When the coolant begins to cool, it shrinks and the vacuum valve in the pressure cap opens, causing the coolant flowing into the coolant overflow tank of the radiator to flow back to the radiator.
